A central tradition in philosophical reflection insists on a distinction between what belongs to the present and what belongs to any number of possible futures. The concept of uncertainty transcends this notion. Risk analysis, management and communication are forced to deal with future dangers with increasing urgency, to the point where the future lives itself out fully and powerfully in the present. Yet an increasingly uncertain future generates increasingly powerful ethical requirements for understanding action in a complex world. The AXA Chair undertakes research on the ethical implications of uncertainty, the epistemology of uncertainty and the ethics of risk on interpersonal, national-political and global levels.
Une tradition centrale dans la réflexion philosophique insiste sur une distinction entre ce qui appartient au présent et ce qui appartient à un certain nombre de futurs potentiels. Le concept d'incertitude transcende cette notion. L'analyse, la gestion et la communication du risque sont confrontés à faire face aux dangers futurs avec une urgence croissante, au point où l'avenir se manifeste pleinement et énergiquement dans le présent. Pourtant, un avenir de plus en plus incertain génère de plus en plus d’exigences éthiques pour comprendre l'action dans un monde complexe. La Chaire AXA entreprend des recherches sur les implications éthiques de l'incertitude, l'épistémologie de l'incertitude et l'éthique du risque sur les plans interpersonnel, poltico-national et mondial.
