Catastrophes: prévision, prévention, précaution

The Chair of the Geopolitics of Risk, J. Peter Burgess, will speak about « L’expérience de la catastrophe » at the annual conference Catastrophes: prévision, prévention, précaution on May 17th at the University Paris-Sud.

The conference will touch upon the development of the relationship between humans and disasters. Although humans have always confronted natural and man-made disasters, modern developments seem to pose new threats (i.e. environmental, financial, political). The new risks challenge our ability to predict and prevent harms. The 2018 symposium of the Center d'Alembert will address these challenges by questioning the modern history of societies treatment of disasters, media portrayal of disasters and its impact, and the evolution of public policies and their implementation.
