Who is responsible for terrorism? What does it mean to take responsibility for an act of terror? What does it mean to give responsibility? To deny responsibility for an act of terror? How has responsibility for preventing or stopping a terrorist attack? Who has responsibility for the consequences of a terrorist attack? Where and when does the responsibility begin, where does it end? Through a typology of « responsibility » the paper will draw analyse the discourse linking ‘responsibility’ and ‘sanity’ in the terrorism trial of Anders Behring Breivik, and draw conclusions about the special kind of accountability that applies to the unaccountably monstrous deed.
